I question the sanity of anyone that would dive from cliffs into unfamiliar dark water when the rocks he's standing on suggest the pool might contain similar geological structures at the sides or bottom that would not be good to slam into face first.

Where does the water come from that fills this pool? Is this divit in the plain volcanic in origin? If the water is subterranean the pool could lead to a larger chamber below. It could be the water travels underground from a river or lake. It could be this underground stream has open caverns along the way so this could explain a larger animal in the pool than the surface area might suggest. It could be some sort of cave fish, snake, maybe even a crocodile.

In Mexico there are huge caverns dug into the limestone that extend inland for miles. I think they were carved by submarine currents along the east coast.. Divers can move from hole to hole in the cavern system locating artifacts from sacrifices dropped into the water from above. I think the goddess worshipped at these holes was associate with crops and rainfall. This might be a similar situation.
