DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A 12-year-old Ohio girl was swimming near the shore in Daytona Beach when she was
bitten on her right foot by a shark last weekend. She was boogie-boarding with her father for the holiday weekend. The girl was taken to the hospital and had
only minor injuries. The attack is the sixth this year in Volusia County alone. For some perspective, here are some stats provided by a University of Florida
study. These numbers represent unprovoked shark attacks since 1882:Working down the east coastline of Florida -- Nassau County has had just two, there have
been 10 in Duval County, 22 in St. Johns County, only seven along the beaches of Flagler County, and in Volusia County, where Daytona Beach is -- a
staggering 216 shark attacks.
